There are a huge variety of dyeing techniques, each with its own unique look, so we invite you to experiment and get creative! But here are some basic tips to get you started on your color journey. The majority of our yarns are made from protein fibre. Protein fibres include wool, alpaca, silk, cashmere, and mohair. Protein fibres must be treated with acid and heat to ensure the dye adheres. This can be done by pre-soaking the yarn in a solution of water and white vinegar or citric acid. Typically just a splash of white vinegar or a couple tablespoons per pound of fibre of citric acid is needed. You can also add white vinegar or citric acid to your yarn along with your dye. You can usually find more information on specific quantities of white vinegar or citric acid needed as well as information on dye techniques from your dye source. Heat can be applied in many different ways, but we recommend agitating the yarn as little as possible to maintain the beautiful structure of the yarn as well as preventing tangling.
Our fibres are sourced from our trusted fibre partners around the world. For more information, please contact us at info@selected-yarns.com.
We currently offer our yarns online and at select live events. Please see @knomad_yarn on Instagram for more info on upcoming live events.

All yarns will pill with constant abrasion, but the more plies a yarn has – the less it will pill. I suggest spark, it is GOTS certified organic merino, and a four ply!
All yarns will pill with constant abrasion, but the more plies a yarn has – the less it will pill. I would suggest trying our four ply yarns such as Spark and Snowdrift!
We do not have a 100% wool fingering weight yarn, ours are blended with varying percentages of nylon or tencel. I would recommend you try out Snowdrift, which is 75% wool and 25% nylon.
Yes!! Check out Latte, its 100% baby alpaca.
I think our best sock yarns are Snowdrift or Egg Shell. Snowdrift has 25% nylon, and Egg Shell has 30%.
The best yarn for a sweater totally depends on you! I have a lovely sweater knit out of stratus, and another out of Bristle. All of our yarns are great candidates for sweaters in my opinion!
While we always recommend hand washing and laying flat to dry for all our yarns, we do have a few that are superwash. Our superwash yarns are Egg Shell, Snowdrift, and Salcantay.
Snowdrift has 25% nylon content while Eggshell has 30%.
Yes, the beginning and end of the skein are wrapped around the skein to prevent knotting, and then tied to the tag. There are two other ties, for a total of three.
Spark is a non-super wash wool. We recommend hand washing or soaking, and laying flat to dry.
There are 10 skeins in a pack of Egret, Egg Shell, Snowdrift, Spark, Tundra, Salcantay, Steam, Latte, Bristle, and Stratus. There are 5 skeins in a pack of Sandstone, Magnolia, Sand Dune, and Ivory.
We recommend hand washing all yarns and laying flat to dry, however we have a few specifically superwash yarns: Snowdrift, Egg Shell, and Salcantay.
Currently we only have yarns that are either pure wool or a blend, with the exception of Latte which is 100% Alpaca!
